Monday Morning Session Observations
I did four 4-minute neurofeedback sessions targeting 12-15 Hz SMR today. The sessions were particularly effective when I combined them with 4-in, 6-out breathing - something I need to remember to practice throughout the day.
Visual vs. Auditory Feedback
During the third session, I experimented by closing my eyes and relying solely on auditory feedback instead of the visual indicators. This led me to an interesting realization about how different feedback modes work.
At first, I thought the difference was about implicit versus explicit feedback - visual indicators being more explicit because there’s no interpretation needed, just a clear visual signal. Auditory feedback seemed more implicit because it requires interpretation.
But that framing wasn’t quite right. The real difference is about conscious versus unconscious processing.
Visual feedback engages the visual processing part of the brain and demands conscious attention. You have to actively watch and interpret what you’re seeing.
Auditory feedback, on the other hand, engages different neural pathways and operates at a less conscious level. It felt like when I worked with auditory-only feedback, I both performed better according to the app’s metrics AND likely achieved better actual training impact.
The hypothesis: auditory neurofeedback might be more effective because it bypasses some of the conscious processing overhead and works more directly with the brain’s regulatory systems.
